Decibel Fluid "The Diary Of John Doe" by Tommy Mann Jr. - May 2004
Decibel Fluid are truly one of the most original and captivating bands in Southeast Texas. Their eleven song album, The Diary Of John Doe is definitely worth the listen. If you dig the Austin styled blues rock sound, then Decibel Fluid are the band for you! The eleven songs of the album have a running time of 52:17, which is quite lengthy. The band is made up of four members that truly feel the music they play. This is quite evident on the tracks Move On and All Good Things. Both have great guitar work, strong vocals, and a solid rhythm section. Come My Way probably had the best vocals on the disc to me, as they seemed raw and exuded with strength. One of the things that makes this cd such a treat is the great vocalization and harmonies contained on so many of the tracks. Harmonies are a rarity in music nowadays, and these guys do it well! The band is good friends with Jason Touchette and Paul Soroski of Podunk. In fact, it was said that both Soroski and Touchette helped in the production and recording of this cd. On several tracks, one can hear the distinct voice of Touchette as he does backing vocals. On that note, probably the most Podunk-like track would have to be Sonic Pulse. It's a good song, but it just has that Podunk feel or vibe to it. As much as I like this cd, not everything about it was agreeable to my musical appetite. Around the middle stretch of the disc, roughly about three songs, it seemed to just lumber along. Also, too many of the songs, while some are great and most good, appear to have the same tempo throughout the entirety of the disc. Decibel Fluid isn't the only band having been guilty of this, and surely won't be the last, especially on a first release. With everything considered, if you have seen the band live, then you know how good these guys are. The disc is an extention of the band, and their perceptions of life. If you truly like Texas based blues rock and roll, then pick up the Decibel Fluid's cd. They have several live shows coming up, but you can also check it out via their website and possibly still at Sam Goody's in Central Mall. |
